English Subs: Nouvelle Vague
In Paris in 1959, Jean-Luc Godard shot his debut film À Bout de Souffle in 20 days, which would later become a legendary classic. The film marked the beginning of the Nouvelle Vague, a new movement in French cinema. Godard, who until then had been a film critic, decided that making films himself was the best form of criticism.
He secured financing for a low-budget film and adapted François Truffaut’s script about a gangster couple to his own taste. Despite doubts from the cast and crew about Godard’s peculiar working methods, his debut proved to be a success, with over 2.5 million admissions in France, awards for Godard, and a BAFTA nomination for lead actress Jean Seberg. In characteristic black-and-white and with a touch of humor, the film reconstructs the making of the famous classic and celebrates the art of filmmaking, the French Nouvelle Vague, and its legendary figures.
