English Subs: The Penguin Lessons

The captivating true story of the unlikely bond between an English teacher and a penguin in Argentina in 1976.

When Englishman Tom Michell goes to work at a school in Argentina in 1976, he encounters a divided country and a group of unruly students. During a trip to Uruguay, he stumbles upon a beach littered with dead penguins, soaked in oil. When he finds one still alive, he reluctantly decides to take it under his wing. The penguin clings to him and continues to follow him. Tom takes the bird to his school, where it quickly becomes a popular pet!

The script was adapted by Jeff Pope from Tom Michell’s memoir of the same name. Tom Michell’s 2015 memoir describes his experiences as a British teacher who traveled to South America in the 1970s to teach at a boys’ boarding school in Argentina.
